2018 Put Your Heart in a Book Conference
Anonymous Author
We all know how important it is to make a first impression. That’s one reason why professional, published authors advise up-and-coming writers to read their novels out loud so they will know how their manuscripts sound when being vetted by an editor and/or agent.
As part of our Put Your Heart in a Book conference, New Jersey Romance Writers are pleased to announce the fourth annual ANONYMOUS AUTHOR event—your big chance to discover the impression YOUR story makes with professional editors and agents right before your eyes!
ANONYMOUS AUTHOR is New Jersey Romance Writers’ way to give unpublished writers a unique chance to have their work dramatically read aloud before select editors and agents. These publishing professionals may then request a full manuscript submission based on what they hear. In years past, several writers have received submission requests after being a part of ANONYMOUS AUTHOR; a number have even gone on to sign with an editor or agent!
The incomparable Anne Walradt, “The Voice of Romance” for the New Jersey Romance Writers’ Golden Leaf awards ceremony, and published author and musical theater actress, RoseAnn DeFranco, will read aloud your first page (up to the first 200 words) of pre-submitted entries. A panel of editors and agents will respond with their on-the-spot, CANDID and UNCENSORED gut reactions.
Readings are “anonymous”—we will not identify the author or title of the manuscript. However, we strongly encourage you to include the market/genre (e.g., paranormal, YA, romantic suspense, etc.). If an editor or agent requests a full or partial manuscript submission as a result of the reading, you will be notified by the moderator after the conference.

How to Participate
To participate, you must be a registered attendee of the conference. Attach up to 200 words from the first page of your manuscript (Note: the words “Chapter One” or “Prologue” do not count in the total) to an email with the subject line “NJRW ANONYMOUS AUTHOR Submission.” Send it to the ANONYMOUS AUTHOR coordinator, Kiersten Hallie Krum, at kiersten [at] kierstenkrum [dot] com. Be sure to include your contact information in the body of the email.
Please send the first 200 words as a Microsoft Word attachment and format as follows: Double-spaced, in an industry-acceptable, READABLE font, or I’m going to roll my eyes and consign your entry to the bottom of the stack.
Entries are now being accepted up till 11:59 pm on October 3rd.
Submissions will be numbered in the order they are received and will be read in that same order. Due to time constraints, we may be unable to read all the entries submitted, so get yours in sooner rather than later! This session may be taped as part of the conference program.
Remember—entries may be no more than the first 200 words from the first page of your manuscript! If any entries are longer, the moderator will get to decide at what point Anne or RoseAnn stop reading instead of you. Please be mindful of that, and make sure you stop in the place you believe will make the editors and agents beg for more!
Good luck to you all!
